How to register a URL

The process of how to register a URL is very simple:

  • you think of the name you want and the top level extension (.com, .net, .org and so on)

  • you visit a domain registrar to check if the domain is available

  • you pay to register it for a year or more.

Within these three steps of course are some very important considerations, such as the best domain name to choose as an investment or for a web site; whether to take the .net or .org or .info or other extension if the .com is already taken; whether to register for multiple years; whether to get public or private registration for the domain, and so on.

This site will help you with those sorts of decisions!

If you know the domain you want, and simply want to buy it right now or simply check if it is free, use a domain registrar search to help you. Here are a couple you can use:

GoDaddy:

#1 GoDaddy.com - Home of the $1.99 domain name

DomainIt:

If you have never registered a domain before and want some background on the actual process, here it is (most registrars require you to do much the same thing):

  • Assuming you have completed your search at the Registrar of your choice and confirmed the domain and extension you want for it are available, you then decide you want to make the purchase (register the url).

  • Then you need to enter your name, address and other contact details. (You only need to enter these details once at the Registrar, even if you intend to buy more domain names later) These details are used to record you as the owner of the domain name, for as long as you keep paying the annual fee.

  • You will then be asked to decide on the length of time you wish to register the URL for – one year, two years, five years and ten years are common options. Sometimes you will gain a discount by registering for a period longer than one year.

  • Next you will be able to choose additional features for the registration, such as privacy, which will hide your contact details from anyone doing a search for the owner of the domain. This will avoid spam or unwanted contact, but will add a bit to the annual fee for the domain.

  • Then you pay for the registration (about $10-$20 for a year) and the url is yours.

  • To get started you can check if the domain you want is available at GoDaddy.com or DomainIt.com
